The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean is like no other book I have read. It’s dark, twisty, and bizarre. I’m talking about creatures who eat books for food and others who eat minds, kind of strange. We can all benefit from reading something different, right?
Summary
Devon comes from a family of book eaters, creatures who consume books for food. When her son is born with a hunger for human minds instead of books, Devon must sacrifice everything to keep her son from being killed.
Review
CONTENT WARNING: This book contains violence, murder, child abduction, and not entirely consensual sex. There were a few parts, as a mom, that upset me.
This book is so freaking weird and brilliant. It was a good spooky book with many twists and turns. It does flashback from past and present tense in each chapter, which made character development amazing. I enjoyed seeing Devon start as a kind little girl to a mom who has to make bad choices.
I love stories when the character is morally gray. Devon is not necessarily a good person but she is a mom who will do whatever it takes to keep her son safe and fed. She is not beneath sacrificing others so her son can eat. And yes, he practically eats brains…
It took me a little bit to catch on to the different terminology of this world, but once I understood, I was in it! If you are looking for something dark, read this book!

“We can only live by the light we’re given, and some of us are given no light at all. What else can we do except learn to see in the dark?”
“Hope was a thing you lost when simply trying to imagine better days became so exhausting, overwhelming, and depressing a task, that one opted for despair out of sheer weariness. Giving up brought a kind of peace.”
