Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young has a little bit of all my favorite things in a book. There is murder, a mystery, magic, first love, and a strange community on an island. I have read a few of her books and this is my favorite so far.
Summary
August and Emery’s lives changed after Lily was found dead. Island residents accused August of murder and forced him and his mother to run.
August returns to Saoirse to bury his mother. He must face his past to fix his relationship with Emery and the other people on the island.
Review
Adrienne Young is such an amazing storyteller and I have loved every book she has written! This one is her first adult novel, so it is different than what she has done in the past. It is way darker / spookier, but I was captivated by the first page.
The character names and their relation to each other were a little confusing. It got better towards the middle. I could have been sleep-deprived and easily confused! (Having a baby = no sleep)
Overall, it was well written and kept me interested. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries or fantasy.
Favorite Quotes
“If this was what it was like to drown, then for the rest of my life, I didn’t want to take another sip of air.”
“Saoirse had secrets, yes. But so did we.”
