Spin the Dawn (book1) & Unravel the Dusk (book 2)
In the Blood of Stars, Maia Tamarin strives to become the greatest tailor in her country, a position only allowed to be held by men. When her father (who was once a great tailor) gets summoned to court, Maia disguises herself as his son to join a competition to become the imperial tailor of the emperor. At the palace, she meets Edan, the emperor’s enchanter, and is forced to go on an adventure to create three magical dresses containing the sun, moon, and stars.
This series is a fun, summer read! Maia is a great character who really matures and changes throughout the series. She begins as a quiet girl barely holding her family together and becomes a strong woman fighting for her family and country. She learns that there are more things worth fighting for, than being a simple tailor.
Edan is an enchanter who has endured a lot during his long life. Everything changes for him once he meets Maia and takes her on their adventure. His priorities shift when he finds love and learns that magic is not everything.
The only thing I did not like about this series was that the storyline seemed to jump around. The first half of Spin the Dawn seemed like a completely different story than the second half. Each book would start with a plot, introduce another plot (that it would focus on for a while), and then jump back to the first plot. It wasn’t hard to follow, but it was odd. Overall, it was a good series if you need something to pass the time.
