In the year 2575, two mega corporations are fighting over an illegal mining operation on the planet Kerenza. Each of the three books documents the experiences of different characters throughout the same invasion.
This story is not written like your typical book series. Instead of the author writing what is being described, the book reads like one big case file. Each chapter is emails, messages, drawings, or video descriptions. I found it a little odd at first but caught on quickly.
I loved that each book was from a different point of view and each character is so well developed. By book three I could easily figure out whose point of view I was reading (sometimes it doesn’t tell you).
If you have read Aurora Rising by the same authors, you definitely need to read this series. Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman make a great team.
Illuminae
Illuminae documents what happens to Kady and Ezra when Beitech invades their home planet and evacuate with other refugees on two badly damaged ships, the Alexander and the Hypatia. As they desperately make their way to jump station Heimdall, they must deal with a plague, a Beitech ship following their every move, and a crazy AI that might kill them all. Their only hope is to travel to Heimdall and travel through the wormhole to freedom.
Gemina
Gemina tells the story of Hanna and Nik on Heimdall as the Hypatia makes their way to them. BeiTech forces arrive to take over the station and prevent the Kerenza refugees from escaping.
Hanna, the station captains daughter and Nik, a unregistered gang member, must join forces to save their home and the refugees traveling towards them.
This book was my favorite out of the three!
Obsidio
Obsidio focuses on Asha and Rhys (a BeiTech soldier) on Kerenza as they deal with the BeiTech forces who have invaded their home. On opposite sides, they must join forces to do whatever it takes to tell their story.
